At the pumpkin patch, Pip looked down a long row of pumpkins.
“Which one is perfect?” he asked.
“Let’s look,” said Momo.
Pebble found a huge pumpkin. He patted its round side. “This one!”
Pip tried to reach around it. His hands couldn’t meet.
“Too big for me!”
Ziggy found one with a crooked stem. It looked like a waving arm.
“Hello, pumpkin!” said Ziggy. Pip waved, too.
Noodle chose a tall, narrow pumpkin. “A tower for my tiny castle!”
Momo picked a flat one. She gave it a nudge. It stayed put.
“Just right for our front step,” she said.
Tumble helped lift the pumpkins into the wagon. Then he tucked his own lumpy pumpkin into a little gap.
Five friends had chosen. Pip’s hands were still empty.
He looked under a leaf. A tiny pumpkin sat beside his foot.
Pip picked it up. His hands fitted around it just right.
He turned it one way. Then the other.
“Oh,” he said. “There you are.”
On the way home, the wagon went bump, bump, bump. The crooked stem waved. Pip waved back, holding his little pumpkin close.
“Did you find the perfect one?” asked Momo.
Pip looked at the tall pumpkin, the flat pumpkin, and all the others. Then he smiled at his friends.
“We found six,” he said.
